The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has once again taken center stage at the Copa America 2024, emerging as a pivotal player in numerous matches. Introduced to ensure fair play and minimize human error, VAR has been both praised and criticized for its influence on the game. This year, its impact has been more pronounced than ever, often changing the course of matches and sparking intense debates among fans, players, and pundits alike. Today we'll delve into several key instances where VAR played a crucial role in altering the outcome of games, assessing its effectiveness and the controversies it stirred.

VAR’s Role in Decisive Moments During the Copa America 2024 Tournament

Brazil Sees Goal Ruled Out by VAR

One of the most talked-about incidents occurred during the group stage clash between Brazil and Costa Rica. In the 30th minute, Marquinhos tapped the ball in towards the back post after a free kick was taken, giving Brazil the lead. VAR was called into action, and after a tense few minutes of analysis, the referee reversed his decision and disqualified the goal based on a fractional offside.

Although Brazil maintained possession for close to 75% of the game, they failed to capitalize on another opportunity, allowing Costa Rica to walk away with a point against the number four team in the world.

Peru vs. Canada: A Controversial Red Card

In a contentious match between Peru and Canada, VAR was again at the center of controversy. Early in the second half, Peru's center-back Miguel Araujo was shown a straight red card for stepping on the leg of Canadian forward Jacob Shaffelburg. The referee had initially given a yellow card, but after a VAR review, the decision was upgraded to a red.

This decision had a massive impact on the game.

Down to ten men, Peru struggled to maintain dominance, and Canada capitalized, scoring to secure a 1-0 victory. Peru's players and fans argued that the red card was harsh, given the context of the challenge, while Canada's supporters believed justice was served.

Not only this, but when Peruvian player Marcos Lopez delivered a headbutt to Canadian defender Alistair Johnston away from the ball, VAR was initiated to look at the incident, only to affirm a foul did not take place, even though instant replays clearly show aggression from the Peruvian player towards the Canadian defender with the ball nowhere in sight.

USA vs. Brazil: Yellow Card Rescinded

Another significant VAR intervention occurred during the match between USA vs Brazil near the start of the tournament. With the score tied at 1-1 in the 51st minute, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was about to take a shot on goal when Chris Richards' fouled him outside the box. After being given a yellow card and Brazil positioned to take a free kick, VAR was initiated to take a second look at the foul. The referee took a look at the replay of the foul, and noticed Richards got a toe on the ball during the foul.

Instead of deciding whether the foul should have been upgraded to a red card or kept at a yellow, the head referee rescinded the yellow card completely, taking away Brazil's dangerous free kick attempt, and allowing the USA to finish the match with a 1-1 draw.

The only problem is, VAR is not allowed to intervene with yellow cards according to VAR's own set of rules.

Argentina vs Chile: Goal Confirmed Onside

In a tough group stage match between Chile and Argentina, VAR played a crucial role in affirming a goal scored by Argentina was onside. With the score 0-0 in the 42nd minute, Christian Romero did a quick spin with the ball and passed it to Giovana Lo Celso who took a shot that was blocked by Claudio Bravo. After a serious of kicks and rebounds, Lautaro Martinez scored a goal. A call from the VAR team to the head referee halted Argentina's celebrations pending confirmation. After taking a second look, the referee determined the goal was legitimate, albeit only by a few inches of being onside.

The Broader Impact of VAR

While these examples highlight specific incidents where VAR played a decisive role, the technology’s broader impact on the tournament cannot be overlooked. VAR has added a layer of scrutiny to every major decision, creating an environment where players and teams must constantly be aware that their actions are being monitored and reviewed.

Pros of VAR in Copa America 2024

  1. Increased Fairness: VAR has undoubtedly increased the fairness of the game by correcting clear and obvious errors. This ensures that teams are less likely to suffer from incorrect decisions that could cost them dearly.

  2. Deterrence of Fouls: Knowing that their actions are under constant review, players are less likely to commit fouls or engage in unsportsmanlike behavior.

  3. Improved Accuracy: The use of technology has improved the accuracy of offside calls, penalty decisions, and disciplinary actions, leading to a more just outcome for matches.

Cons of VAR in Copa America 2024

  1. Disruption of Flow: One of the main criticisms of VAR is that it disrupts the flow of the game. Lengthy reviews can break the rhythm of play and create frustration among players and fans.

  2. Subjectivity in Interpretation: Despite its technological basis, VAR decisions are still subject to human interpretation. This can lead to inconsistencies and debates over whether the correct call was made.

  3. Emotional Impact: The emotional highs and lows created by VAR decisions can be extreme. A goal celebration can quickly turn into disappointment if VAR intervenes, affecting the morale of players and fans.

The Copa America 2024 has demonstrated both the strengths and weaknesses of VAR in soccer. Its ability to correct errors and ensure fair play is undeniable, but its impact on the flow and emotional intensity of the game remains a point of contention. As technology continues to evolve, so too will the implementation of VAR, striving to strike a balance between precision and the human spirit of the game. For now, VAR stands as a crucial, albeit controversial, player in the world of soccer, shaping the outcomes of matches and the destinies of teams in significant ways.
